KP Government Unveils Internship Program for BS Students with Rs. 25,000 Stipend

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has officially decided to launch a comprehensive internship program specifically designed for BS (Bachelor of Science) students. The initiative aims to provide young learners with practical exposure while offering crucial financial support during their academic journey.

The decision was finalized during a high-level briefing session chaired by the Provincial Minister for Education, Meena Khan Afridi, where officials presented a detailed overview of the proposed Ehsaas Internship Program. This program is being hailed as a strategic intervention to enhance the employability of thousands of students across the province.

Program Duration and Financial Benefits

According to the official plan unveiled during the briefing, the internship program will be flexible in length, operating for a period ranging from two to six months. This sliding scale allows students to choose a duration that best fits their academic schedules while still gaining meaningful workplace experience.

In a move that addresses the financial barriers often faced by aspiring professionals, the KP government has set a competitive monthly stipend. Each participating student will receive Rs. 25,000 per month during their internship tenure. This financial component is expected to ease transportation, meal, and other incidental costs, allowing students to focus entirely on skill development without economic distress.

Strict Eligibility Criteria: CGPA 3.0 Mandatory

To ensure that the program attracts high-achieving and dedicated candidates, the government has established a clear academic threshold. Only those BS students who have secured a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 or its equivalent will be eligible to apply.

Officials confirmed that the program is not limited to a single discipline or institution. Instead, students enrolled in universities and degree colleges across all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be able to submit their applications. This province-wide scope is designed to ensure equal opportunities for students in both urban centers like Peshawar and remote districts such as Chitral, Kohistan, and South Waziristan.

Implementation Framework and Coordination Offices

During the briefing to Minister Meena Khan Afridi, a robust implementation framework was discussed to guarantee the program’s success. A key feature of this framework is the establishment of dedicated coordination offices at universities and colleges throughout the province.

These offices will act as facilitation hubs, responsible for:

  • Verifying student eligibility and CGPA records.

  • Liaising between academic institutions and host organizations (public/private sector).

  • Disbursing the Rs. 25,000 monthly stipend efficiently.

  • Monitoring the progress of interns to ensure genuine learning outcomes.

Minister Afridi emphasized that the goal is to move beyond traditional classroom learning. “Our BS students possess strong theoretical knowledge, but they often lack the practical skills demanded by the job market,” he stated during the briefing. “This internship program, with its financial support and structured exposure, will transform our youth into industry-ready professionals.”

Alignment with Ehsaas Framework

The program is being developed under the broader Ehsaas Internship Program umbrella, which has historically focused on poverty alleviation through skill development. By integrating BS students into this framework, the KP government is effectively expanding the social safety net to include the educated youth, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder career development.

Expected Impact on KP’s Economy and Workforce

Education analysts believe that this initiative will have a multi-tiered positive impact on the province. Firstly, it will reduce the “experience paradox” where fresh graduates cannot find jobs because they lack experience, and cannot gain experience without a job. Secondly, the monthly stipend of Rs. 25,000 will inject much-needed liquidity into local economies as students spend on goods and services. Finally, it is expected to lower youth unemployment rates by creating a direct pipeline from universities to workplaces.

Next Steps for Students

While an official application portal has yet to be launched, the KP Education Department has indicated that registrations will begin in the coming weeks following the finalization of partnerships with host organizations. Students are advised to prepare their academic transcripts (showing a minimum CGPA of 3.0) and to stay in touch with their respective university coordination offices for rolling updates.

The Provincial Minister has directed officials to expedite the setup of coordination offices so that the first cohort of BS students can begin their internships within the current academic year. With a clear focus on merit, financial support, and practical training, the KP Internship Program is poised to become a model for youth development in Pakistan.
