HEC Directs Public Universities to Include AI Course in Degree Programs

In a significant move to modernize higher education in Pakistan, public sector universities have been directed to introduce a mandatory 3-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their academic programs. The decision aims to equip students with essential digital skills and prepare them for the rapidly evolving technology-driven job market.

According to official directives, all public universities will incorporate a course titled "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence" into relevant undergraduate degree programs. The initiative has been launched following recommendations issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and was endorsed during a consultative meeting of vice chancellors from public universities.

AI Education to Become a Core Part of Higher Learning

To support the implementation process, the Information Technology University (ITU) Lahore developed three proposed AI course modules. The course outlines were reviewed and approved during the 45th meeting of higher education authorities, paving the way for nationwide adoption.

Officials stated that the AI course will be introduced in phases across various disciplines. Universities have been instructed to align their curricula with HEC guidelines and ensure the timely inclusion of the course in academic programs.

Universities Receive Formal Instructions

Authorities have also issued formal notifications to public sector universities, particularly in Punjab, emphasizing the importance of AI education. The approved course outlines have been shared with institutions to facilitate smooth implementation and standardization across the higher education sector.
