Islamabad: The government has decided to set up a Gandhara International University in Taxila to highpoint the ancient cultural heritage of the state and to attract the academics interested in research on Buddhism as well as in other religions.

As per the details given by the official sources, an advisory committee had been made to administer the establishment of the university. The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) has been given the task to set up the university whereas the Prime minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has formally approved the project.

The chairman of ETPB and project steering committee Siddiqul Farooque said that the varsity will serve as a centre of excellence on Buddhism, Buddhist art and the architecture and also as the centre for interreligious harmony where scholars from Buddhist states will be invited to study.

He furthermore said that the university expects to attract the religious tourists, scholars as well as the researchers from all over the world particularly from Japan and Korea.
