Understanding the Corona Relief Tiger Force Initiative in Pakistan

The Corona Relief Tiger Force (CRTF) was officially launched in March 2020 by the then-Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, as a massive national volunteer initiative to combat the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than traditional salaried employment, this program served as a patriotic mobilization platform, inviting over a million passionate young volunteers, doctors, engineers, and students to offer their services pro bono. Managed through the Pakistan Citizen Portal, the initiative aimed to bridge the gap between civil administrations and vulnerable communities. Registered volunteers were tasked with critical grassroots operations, including the distribution of food rations to daily-wage earners, managing quarantine centers, and ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) during smart lockdowns. While it faced political debates regarding its scope—which later expanded to include tree plantation and locust control drives—the Tiger Force remains a historic exercise in community-driven crisis management and youth engagement in Pakistan's recent history.
