10% medical institutes in Pakistan are fake, says PMDC President

Karachi: The president of Pakistan Medical and Dental colleges Dr Shabir Ahmed Lehri on Friday said that almost ten percent of private sector medical colleges in Pakistan are “fake” and are  just “money-making ventures” being run by the owners of ghee, textile and by sugar mill owners.

While speaking at the inaugural session of a three day international conference, Dr Lehri said that these fake institutes were providing poor medical education.

“90% of private sector medical colleges are imparting quality education, however the other 10% are just cheating the public,” said PMDC President.

The 3-day conference on “Bridging the gap in primary healthcare innovations, translations beyond” was arranged by the Ziauddin University. The conference was attended by the national as well as international health experts.

Dr Lehri said that strict action was being taken against those who were destroying the medical education in country.

 “Pakistan Medical and Dental council is there to facilitate anyone who is going to work on merit; we are there to resolve issues as well as to facilitate the health community. We are working against corruption and maladministration.”

While addressing, Dr Lehri further said that when he took over as the PMDC president, there were almost 20,000 applications pending for registration and he and his team worked hard day and night to address them all.

He said there were 3 types of medical courses in the country being taught at medical educational institutions across the country.

He moreover said that curriculum committee of PMDC was working day and night to chalk out a single course for all medical educational institutes in the coming days.
