Karachi Metropolitan University (KMU), formerly known as the Karachi Medical & Dental College (KMDC), stands as a premier public-sector institution located in North Nazimabad, Karachi. Established originally in 1991 by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), it holds the proud distinction of being Pakistan’s very first medical and dental institution managed by a municipal corporation. In recent years, the institution was formally upgraded to a full-fledged university, expanding its academic horizon well beyond its foundational medical roots. Operating under the administrative umbrella of the KMC, KMU is dedicated to delivering highly accessible, affordable, and quality higher education to students across Sindh. At the core of Karachi Metropolitan University's academic prestige are its highly sought-after undergraduate programs. The university offers five-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degrees, both of which are fully accredited by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and affiliated with the University of Karachi. To ensure robust practical competencies, KMU integrates rigorous clinical rotations and hands-on training at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, its primary teaching facility. This real-world medical exposure prepares graduates to excel in national and international licensing examinations. Beyond core medicine and dentistry, the university’s expanded academic faculties include the College of Nursing, the Department of Physical Therapy—which offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree—and the College of Pharmacy.
