Course outline

Brief Introduction

M Phil/MS in English is an intensive program that provides its students a strong grounding both in Linguistics and Literature. The program encourages its students to be inquisitive by engaging them in research-based assignments. The program attracts a wide variety of students whose teaching and non-teaching backgrounds find plenty to interest them. Overall, it is a well-rounded and through program that will enhance a student’s knowledge in language and literature and also increase his/her ability to undertake academic research at an advanced level. 

It is a two year program comprising two modules of four core and four elective courses plus a dissertation of six credit hours in case of M. Phil and two additional courses in case of MS program. All the taught courses are of three credit hours and the total weightage of the degree is thirty credit hours. However, the students may opt for MS option by substituting their dissertation portion with two courses of three credit hours each in the fourth semester.

 

Objectives

With the rising demand for English language teachers at higher levels of education, a paucity of capable teachers is acutely felt in Gujranwala city and the surrounding areas. Keeping this demand in view GIFT University launched a broad based program which caters to the needs of a variety of higher level English language teachers. In addition to the taught courses, the M. Phil program provides a unique opportunity to the students to excel in the field of research.

 

Entry Requirements of Program

Graduates holding MA English, MA English Language Teaching (ELT), MA Teaching of English as Foreign Language (TEFL) degrees or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the HEC with minimum second division or 2.50 CGPA are eligible to apply. 

Applicants with additional qualifications such as a relevant post-graduate diploma or teaching experience in the relevant field will be given preference. Admission will be awarded strictly on merit determined on the basis of the applicant’s previous academic record and performance in the interview.

Dissertation (15000-20000 words) is applicable only in case of M. Phil students. The students opting for MS in English will be offered two additional courses, each of three credit hours.
