The College of Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences (COAVS), Lahore, as a constituent body of King Edward Medical University and Mayo Hospital, is of the top teaching colleges of ophthalmic sciences in Pakistan. It was start as Punjab Institute of Preventive Ophthalmology (PIPO) in 1999 and subsequently designated to COAVS in 2007 so it could better serve its teaching and clinical training courses/missions. Its purpose is to eliminate avoidable blindness by training ophthalmologists and vision science practitioners. COAVS addresses training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, therefore COAVS incorporates theory as well as practice at the clinical level so as to be positioned to provide significant value in eye care in the country.
COAVS provides a broad spectrum of vision sciences and ophthalmology programs. The undergraduate programs involve a four-year BSc (Hons) Vision Sciences, which has specializations in Optometry, Orthoptics, and Investigative Ophthalmology. Postgraduate opportunities involve MPhil programs for the above-stated specializations. The college also offers diploma programs like the Ophthalmic Technician Training Course (OTTC) and Ophthalmic Nursing. For doctors, COAVS provides fellowships in Vitreoretina and Pediatric Ophthalmology, as well as short courses in diagnostic ophthalmology and laser use.
COAVS has spanking new facilities, such as refraction and low vision clinics, that are fully equipped with sophisticated diagnostic equipment for improving practical training. The college is well-endowed with full-scale resources like a good library, computer facilities, and distinct hostels for boys and girls. Apart from academics, COAVS fosters student participation through dramatic, literary, debating, photography, and sports clubs. Such extra activities provide an all-around educational experience, ensuring personal development and community service among students.
