Islamabad: Times Higher Education has issued the latest list of its annual university rankings, “The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17” for the current year. Just 7 Pakistani universities made to the top 980 of the best universities of the world.

Times Higher Education ranked 980 universities from 79 countries in its 13th annual release. These universities were further chosen from a pool of 1,313 varsities.

Just three Pakistani universities ranked in the top 800 of the best universities of the world, along with four being ranked in the 800-978, by the Times Higher Education. The COMSATS Institute of Information Technology was ranked at the top, followed by NUST and the Quaid-i-Azam University, all of which were ranked in the top 800 of best universities of the world. The University of Agriculture Faisalabad, followed by BZU, University of Karachi (UOK) as well as University of Lahore that were ranked in the 801-978 bracket.

The University of Oxford topped the list, by becoming the first ever university of UK having been ranked as the best university of the world through the last 12 years. The second position was secured by the California Institute of Technology whereas the third position was clinched by Stanford University.

Though, the report shows that the Asian universities were rapidly closing in to the top. Two universities of Asia entered the top 100 bracket, four joined the 100-200, whereas the university from India, making it to its best ever position, closed near to the top place of 200.

The rankings from the Times Higher Education do not exactly fit in to the general perspective of the people or not even to its other counterpart reports.

For instance, the recently released University Rankings of the world by QS didn’t rank the University of Oxford on the top, or not even in the top three universities. Moreover, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which was ranked first by the QS was ranked 5th by The Times Higher Education.

The same pattern existed for the Pakistani universities. NUST ranked first by QS while ranked second by the Times Higher Education. The Times Higher Education ranked the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology on the top, a university which did not even made it to the rankings by QS.
