Karachi: More than 400 fellowships and 106 memberships were granted to successful medical professionals at the 50th convocation of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) organized on the college premises on Thursday.

The convocation in Karachi was the first of a series of ceremonials to be organized in Lahore and Islamabad in coming days.

Acknowledging the candidates on their achievement, chief guest of the ceremony Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi, director of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), advised them not to forget their duty towards their parents, teachers, their alma mater and society as well.

“In a country where 50 percent people are uneducated and 80 percent population could not afford decent healthcare, and you are enough lucky to get education in a prestigious institution like the CPSP that has made specialized education and training available at your doorway.

He moreover said “I can still remember the days when I had to borrow money to go to United Kingdom for specialization. Living in an unfamiliar country where you had no roof over your head, no job to make your bread and pay for the specialization was quite tough”.

Formerly, president of CPSP Zafarullah Chaudhry briefed the audience on the progress that the institution had made up to now. He said that college had produced till 2015 approximately 18,000 fellows and more than 8,000 members, which set up almost 95 percent of specialist manpower of the state.

Later, the chief guest along with the CPSP president conferred degrees of the Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) and the Member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (MCPS) on 471 and 106 candidates, respectively.

A recipient of Rashid Lateef Gold Medal, Dr Mehreen Khaleel Qureshi, who specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology, showed appreciation towards her family that included her husband, parents, sister and in-laws.

She said while receiving the medal “They all helped me alot. I have a two-year-old son who has suffered a lot during my studies. I cannot afford failure so I really worked hard”.
