Islamabad, National University of Modern Languages (NUML) on Wednesday arranged a Punjabi mazahiya mushaira in which students, teachers, staff members and the general public burst into laughter while cheering the extreme of literary made the event joyful and delivered thought provoking messages and lessons.

The event was organised by the Department of Pakistani Languages under the directions of Iftikhar Arif, a renowned poet and scholar.

Renowned poet Dr Inamul Haq Javed and Pakistna Academy of Letters Chairman Abdul Hameed were the chief guests on the occasion, while the event was chaired by Professor Anwar Masood, the living legend in Urdu and Punjabi humorous poetry, and NUML Rector Maj Gen (r) Masood Hasan.

The Punjabi poetry event, featuring Professor Anwar Masood, Dr Iamul Haq Javed, Sarfraz Shahid, Musafir Lodhi, Saleem Akhtar and Shahbaz Chohan, was arranged in a careful manner, while poetry of every artiste was a virtual literary treat for those who attended it.

The organiser of the event, Dr Habib Nawaz, said that the purpose of the mushaira was to provide the students of languages and literature with an opportunity to have an exposure to see and hear all those poets whose literature and poetry they read in their syllabus.

The event was also attended by DG Brig Azam Jamal, Registrar Brig (r) Saeed Akhtar Malik, directors, deans, heads, faculty members and students of the university. In the end, the NUML rector presented shields to the organisers and the poets.

Anwar Masood fascinated the audience with his linguistic and poetic excellence embedded with puns, witticism, satires and sarcasm. He recited his all-time hits, including ‘Nak jay mathay utay hunda’, ‘Banian’ and ‘Jehlum da pul’, which turned the auditorium upside down with bouts of laughter. However, his life-like narration of Punjabi poem ‘Ambari’ brought tears into the eyes of the audience, as there couldn’t have been better depiction of a mother’s love and affection for his son than what he did in his Punjabi poem.

Dr Inamul Haq was also with no less fun package, with his ‘Dieting’, ‘Bakra mandi’ and other poetic pieces. Sarfraz Shahid recited his all-times hit ‘Wadi tay niki madam’ and ‘Sultana’. Moreover, Shahbaz Chohan, Musafir Lodhi, Saleem Akhtar, Shafqat Habib Shafaq, Younis Ejaz and Sheikh Ejaz also presented their Punjabi verses and have a treat to the audience with the art of their Punjabi poetry.

Besides, some university students also presented their humorous poetry and received appreciation from the audience at their debut attempts.

Speaking on the occasion, NUML Rector Maj Gen (r) Masood Hasan said, “The university is committed to providing an environment to the students and faculty members where they can continue with their intellectual pursuits and this literary event would encourage our students and teachers to get guidance and support from poets whom they idealise and love to read.Daily Times.
