KU restrained from holding MBBS paper

KARACHI: The University of Karachi was on Wednesday controlled by the Sindh High Court from holding supplementary examinations of MBBS final year’s surgery theory paper without court permission.

A two-judge bench commanded by Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi gave the interim order on a petition of 114 last year learners of five medical institutions, four of them private concerns, who had unsuccessful in the final examination.

Liaquat National Medical College students, Liaquat College of Medicine, Jinnah Medical Dental College, and Dentistry, Sir Syed College for Medicine and local government-run Karachi Medical and Dental College moved the court challenging their results in surgery theory paper.

The supplicant students, represented by Advocate Saify Ali Khan, impleaded the vice chancellor, registrar, examination controller and dean of medicine faculty of the university, primary and final paper setters, and heads of the sections of the five medical colleges.

The seat that also counted in Justice Aziz-ur-Rehman issued notice to the defendants directing them to submit their particular replies on the appeal and put off the hearing to 24^th of Dec.

The supplicants’ counsel told the judges that the learners had passed all their theoretical and oral examination excluding the surgery theory paper. She said the results of the disputed paper were declared with a postponement of just about two months, on 21^st of Oct. The counsel said that only 277 of the 483 students, who had seemed in the surgery theory paper, were announced passed.

Saify Khan Advocate struggle to surmount that the question paper of surgery theory was out of course outline and not in accordance with the Table of Specification specified by the university.

She said the ‘Table of specification’ was duly permitted by the university’s dean of medicine and permitted by the head of the department of surgery of different medical institutions.

The counsel submitted that the marks sheets of the supplicant students would become questionable if they appeared in the supplementary examination.

The supplicants asked the law court to announce that surgery theory paper of 2014 was irregular, vague and out of context.

They additional demanded the court to direct the authorities worried to give 15 percent compensatory marks as a right of the  petitioners and not as compromise.

The court was also told to restrain the defendant authorities from holding supplementary papers of surgical procedure theory for the last year students.
