National College of Arts has a historical tradition. Much of its present tone was set long ago when it was known as the Mayo School of Arts which was established to tribute Lord Mayo. Lockwood Kipling, who was a teacher of painting and sculpture was appointed as first principal of the school.
In 1985, government of Punjab gave the college status of autonomous degree awarding institute through an ordinance. Now the college awards Bachelor Degrees in Fine Arts, Design and Architecture, postgraduate programs in the field of Visual Arts, MA (Hons) in Visual Arts and M Phil leading to PhD in Communication and Cultural Studies. Recognizing the requirement of development in the field of Information Technology, the college started another post-graduate program in Multimedia Arts in September 2001. The college is also offering Masters Degree in Interior Design.
