A USAID-funded project under Gender Equity Program (GEP) of Aurat Foundation was unveiled yesterday at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Islamabad to support gender and women’s studies for the development of the community.

In the supervision of this project the university will deliver the research opportunities to the aspirants from 7 various zones. The Orientation workshops will be hold in more than fifteen months, thata re targeted at strengthening the Gender and Women’s Studies Department of the university to hold the research-based study. In these workshops, the aspirants and also the faculty members would be briefed on gender and pro women legislature.

While conversing at the launching ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui labeled the project as the highly important in capacity-building of the faculty and non-faculty staff on gender. He moreover said that the university will soon introduce M.Phil-level degree on gender as well as women studies in order to make aware the community on an inclusive-level regarding the role of gender in the complete socio-economic development of the state. Dr Shahid also constrained that AIOU will complete its responsibility to hold the research on matters regarding women as well as publicize its findings to policy-makers and to the other related quarters.

 The female department of the society has proved over the years that they are capable to outstrip the males in attaining the excellence in different fields. He said that the society especially the media as well as the educational institutions requisite to determine their role and highlight their position in improvement of society as well as their role in nation-building.

This launching ceremony at AIOU was also addressed by the representatives of Aurat Foundation Mr. Naeema Mirza as well as by the Ms. Mahpara Shakil Ghouri who gave summary of the role of organization and its attainments in improving the respect and living situations of women. They also spoke regarding their efforts to combat gender-based strength and promote the welfare of women workers.

In the beginning, Dr. Riffat Haque, Chairman Department of Gender Studies stressed on the main features of the project, and said they would soon offer need-based courses of to inflate the academic network on the gender studies.
