Press Release: (Lahore) Degrees, gold medals and awards were conferred upon as many as 1350 graduates in the 11th UMT Convocation held today at the campus of the University of Management and Technology, Lahore, with 100 graduates coming from its Sialkot Campus. The ceremony was marked with deep appreciation from teachers, parents, and friends, high motivation by the Rector, catching eye of the corporate sector, patronage by the Chancellor and best wishes for the future. The number of UMT alumni after this convocation has reached 15000+ with 10,000 existing students.

Punjab Governor Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana, who is Patron of the University, was the Chief Guest of the Convocation while Federal Minister of Planning, National Reforms and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Ex-chairman Senate Pakistan Muhammad Mian Soomro, US Consul General Lahore Zachary Harkenrider were also present on the occasion. 

Around 959 Bachelors, 364 Masters, and 3 PhDs were awarded to the students of UMT’s different schools and institutes. Besides, 47 Patron’s Medals, 45 Rector’s Medals, 7 Special Medals, 10 Medals for Extracurricular Activitites and 5 Awards for Exceptional Academic Excellence and cash prizes were given to the winners. This year, only 9 students succeeded in securing Dr A Q Khan Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.   

In his inaugural speech, Rector UMT Prof Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad welcomed the guests and congratulated the graduates and their parents. He said that UMT had started its journey of knowledge in 1990 and today it has made a name for itself because of its groundbreaking research and quality education. He said it was quite challenging to transform UMT into a general category university but now this has been done and we are working towards internalization for which a setup in Dubai and Ankara has already been initiated. Dr Hasan termed UMT students as ‘global graduates’ who met all requirements found in the students of European and American universities. The Rector mentioned successful range of various conferences recently held at the University premises on the themes of business, management, economics, Islamic Banking, engineering and mathematics. He also mentioned Faran Awais Butt, one of UMT's professors who had secured a US Patent. Dr Murad emphasized the graduates not to stop the process of learning throughout their lives.

Addressing the Convocation, the Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal said that it was a matter of immense pleasure for him to be at UMT and share his views with the students and faculty. He said that the soil of Pakistan was ideal for the dreamers who wished to find the interpretation of their dreams with skills such as positive thinking and hard work. He said that the present government had succeeded in improving law and order situation, recovering economy and reducing severe power crisis. Mr Ahsan said that further 10,000-megawatt electricity would be produced by 2018 whereas China-Pakistan Economic Corridor would bring a number of opportunities and prosperity in the country. The Minister laid stress on the graduates to support the vision 2025 that aimed at placing Pakistan among top 25 economies of the world.

The Governor Punjab Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana while addressing the Convocation, congratulated all graduates and their parents. He said UMT was one of the finest institutions that were building positive image of the country. He said he had visited many universities and found Pakistani students possessing excellent skills and abilities that could be used for the betterment of the country. The Governor said that trustworthiness, honesty, integrity and loyalty were the only principles that would upgrade us as a nation. Mr Rajwana said that the government at federal and provincial level had introduced both short and long term reforms and various projects making youth entrepreneurs and empowering them. Later on, he gave away degrees, prizes and medals.

The UMT Annual Convocation was also addressed by US Consul General Lahore Zachary Harkenrider who assured students that US would continue supporting the cause of education in Pakistan and for this the US Government was already investing in several academic plans. The 11th UMT Convocation was attended by graduating students, their parents, teachers, and staff and faculty members. Besides, University Registrar Aneesa Rahat, Controller Examination Imran Zahid, deans and directors were seated at the stage.
