Karachi: 3 aspirants of Usman Institute of Technology (UIT), Karachi have made a model for wearable robotic legs, which would assist the disabled persons move and work on their own again.

“We have made this exoskeleton model for the AIOU to provide free education to the disable studentsparaplegics to help them in the sitting, standing as well as funtions,” said Moutasim Abbasi, the main leader of the project.

The other two students of this project include Adil Hanif and Muhammad Usman.

This group, working under the guidance of Associate Professor Engineer Raza Jafri, displayed their 4 months of hard work and research at the Pakistan Auto Parts Show (PAPS) recently organized at Expo Centre, Karachi.

This battery-powered model cost the students One Lakh and fifty thousand rupees and it runs along with a motor.

A completely charged battery runs for almost half an hour or more.

“This wearable exoskeleton will assist the paraplegics get rid of wheelchairs and sticks,” said Adil.

While clearing up some features of the robotic device, he said that 6 motors attached to the system would perform as a substitute for major joints like hips, knees, as well as ankles for positioning the upper body, thighs, shank, and ankle.

The exoskeleton also has an ability to curl up a person having weight of almost 85 kgs and can exceed this limit if the motors, hydraulics as well as mechanical structure are further modified.

 “We are making a strategy commercialize this prototype at an affordable cost for the paraplegics that will be a fraction of the price of same projects in Japan and Berkeley,” said project leader.

Projects like these, he hoped, can demonstrate a breakthrough in these bio-technical aids which will be extremely helpful in a developing state like Pakistan.
