Lahore, Candidates having 81.77% and 81.62% marks will be admitted to public sector medical and dental institutes, respectively, in Punjab according to the merit list issued by the University of Health Sciences (UHS).

The last score for King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Lahore, remained 87.2091% while that of de’ Montmorancy College of Dentistry (DCD), Lahore, 81.7636%, UHS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Malik Husain Mubbashar said at a news conference.

The last merit of Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC), Lahore, remained 85.4727 per cent; Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Lahore, 84.0909 per cent; Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJCM), Lahore, 83.9182 per cent; Nishtar Medical College (NMC), Multan, 83.6273 per cent; Punjab Medical College (PMC), Faisalabad, 83.1091 per cent; Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC), Rawalpindi, 83.0182 per cent; Quaid-i-Azam Medical College (QMC), Bahawalpur, 82.5909 per cent; Sargodha Medical College (SMC), Sargodha, 82.4909 per cent; Nawaz Sharif Medical College (NSMC), Gujrat, 82.3182 per cent and Shaikh Zayed Medical College (SZMC), Rahim Yar Khan, 82.1636 per cent; Nishtar Institute of Dentistry (NID), Multan, 81.6727 per cent while that of Dental Section, Punjab Medical College (DSPMC) Faisalabad, 81.6273 per cent.

Prof Mubbashar said a total of 7,303 aspirants applied for admission to the 18 public sector medical and dental colleges from Nov 1 to 7. Candidates securing 75 per cent or above aggregate marks, calculated by adding 70 per cent of their FSc or equivalent marks and 30 per cent of their entrance test score were eligible to compete for 2,842 MBBS and 175 BDS seats in public sector medical and dental colleges of the Punjab on open merit basis.

Some 60 candidates applied for 20 seats reserved for disabled students and 660 applied for 61 reserved seats for under-developed districts of Punjab — Muzzafargarh, Rajanpur, Lodhran, Bhakkar, Layyah and Dera Ghazi Khan.

The newly established institutions in Sahiwal, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Dera Ghazi Khan got overwhelming response as a number of candidates opted for admission to these colleges. The last merit for Sahiwal Medical College was 81.9545 per cent, for Dera Ghazi Khan Medical College 81.7727 per cent, Sialkot Medical College 81.8364 per cent while for Gujranwala Medical College the last merit remained 82.0545 per cent.

Prof Mubbashar said that a structured test of 369 applicants was conducted by a seven-member board of eminent Huffaz-i-Quran for six days and it was video graphed to maintain transparency. Some 142 candidates were declared Huffaz-i-Quran
and awarded 20 marks each which were added to their FSc score for the final calculation of merit.

Similarly, three committees, each consisting of five senior medical professors examined 60 candidates who claimed to be disabled for three days in order to verify their disabilities.

The committee for verification of physical disabilities was headed by Prof Faisal Masood, for visual disability by Prof Muhammad Tayyab and for hearing impairments by Prof Muhammad Mujeeb. The committees declared 31 candidates to be disabled. The last merit for admission against the reserved seats for disabled candidates remained 67.2818 per cent.

The vice-chancellor said some 234 candidates applied for 10 seats reserved for Muzzafargarh district, the last merit being 83.7545 per cent; for Layyah 124 candidates applied and last merit 83.4455 per cent; for nine seats of Lodhran district 39 applied, the merit 80.1364 per cent; for Bhakkar district 47 candidates applied with last candidate admitted at the score of 80.5000 per cent; a total of 56 candidates applied for Rajanpur district, the merit being 82.7364 per cent for city and 63.0182 per cent for tribal area; for 13 seats of Dera Ghazi Khan 160 candidates applied with last merit being 84.4818 per cent for city area and 80.8273 for tribal area seats.

Documents and certificates of all the candidates either being admitted or likely to be admitted were got verified by the UHS from the boards and the respective district authorities.

“The UHS sent its own team in each board for the verification of certificates,” said the vice-chancellor.

Last year, some 570 or so candidates were disqualified from admissions after their FSc certificates were found bogus.

However, this year only two candidates namely Muhammad Aamir Raza s/o Zafar Ali from Faisalabad and Fahad Sarfraz s/o Muhammad Ashraf from Lahore submitted forged FSc certificates with their applications. These candidates had been permanently disqualified for admission to medical colleges and their cases had been referred to Anti-Corruption Establishment, he added.

Prof Mubbashar said the UHS had completed the admission process with utmost care and confidentiality under the principles of merit, justice, equity and transparency. He said the process and procedures of entrance test and admissions had been institutionalised by the university for generations to come.

“We have formulated standard operating procedures for each and every step. Syllabus for next year’s entrance test is being published and it will be widely distributed among all stake-holders including colleges, institutions, boards etc, so that students are aware of it well ahead of time,” he said.

Note:
The candidates who applied for admission against seats reserved for underdeveloped districts were required to submit certificates, issued by the heads of the institutions from which he/she completed his/her primary, secondary and higher secondary education, duly verified by the EDO (education) and DCO of the respective district, with the application form.
