Karachi: A medical student sets himself on fire after he was stopped to enter the examination hall. The university administration refused him to appear in final year exam due to reaching the campus late.

Abdul Basit, 27, was a fourth year student of Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Hamdard University. According to the witnesses Basit reach the university campus one and half hour late due to traffic jam. The professor on duty didn’t allow him to enter the examination hall and asked him to visit the Principal’s office to get his approval.

Basit, requested principal to allow him to appear in the exam but principal refused his request and asked him to sit in supplementary examinations. Discouraged by the refusal, prompted student to take his own life. Abdul, went outside the campus and put himself over fire after drawing petrol from his car.

Wrapped in flames, Basit walked to the campus where some students saw him and tried to put out the fire with a piece of cloth. Students took him to the nearby Abbasi Shaheed hospital and they referred him to the Civil Hospital’s Burns ward. He died during his treatment, said additional police surgeon Dr Qarar Ahmed.
