Just weeks after opening a record-breaking hole in the ozone layer has closed. It was considered the largest hole in the ozone layer so far.
The gap because of this hole in the vital layer comes as the new record, earlier in the month, for the depletion of the ozone layer occurred in the northern hemisphere.
It is roughly estimated that the unprecedented hole was equal in size of Greenland, and it stretched over the top of the icecap. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) on April 23rd, had announced that the affected area of ozone had recovered.
However, in the earlier times, there were smaller holes appeared in the northern hemisphere. But, this time the scientists said that it was the real ozone hole in the Arctic region.
CAMS reported that the hole appeared due to unusual weather patterns over the Arctic. Mostly cold temperatures and powerful winds become the reason for a polar vortex which becomes the reason for vast ozone depletion by creating the frigid condition.
Though, it is tweeted by the organization that, it is coming to see that polar vortex is not quite come to an end yet. There are chances of reforming it in the next few days. Ozone values are not going back to the lower levels seen earlier in the previous month.
It is observed that the hole is closed due to less pollution levels because of the lockdown situation throughout the world to contain the spread of the outbreak, Covid-19. But the organization replied that;
The Arctic ozone hole did not disappear because of the lockdown situation, rather it was caused by an uncommonly strong and long-lasting polar vortex.
The CAMS scientists said that this ozone hole was basically an indication of a larger problem that can lead to serious ozone depletion. However, the hole closed because of the local annual cycle. Moreover, it is hoping that the ozone layer is also healing, but under a slow process.
