Lahore: University of Punjab Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Moeen resigns at Friday from his seat under political pressure. He has sent his resignation letter to Governer Punjab Rafique Rajwana. He told a private news TV channel that he had been facing alleged extreme pressure from the Punjab government following he refused to hand over 2-kanal of university’s land near Chauburji to the government.
It has also been reported that a tussle was going on between the VC and the Punjab Higher Education Minister Raza Ali Gillani, which, according to some PU senior faculty members, was a reason behind the departure of Dr Nasar. Ex interim VC was also alleged facing charges against corruption in university matters and HED demanded his resignation.
Punjab Univeristy's Teacher Front had also protested over the governmnet pressure to succumb the university land. According to them university land can be used only for teaching purposes.
In a similar case, former VC Dr Khalid Hameed Sheikh had resigned from his post and after refusing to give 4 marlas of land to the government in 1997.
