The Punjab Government has introduced a major reform in the practical examination marking system for board students across Punjab. Under the newly announced policy, examiners present at examination centers will no longer have the authority to award full marks in practical examinations.
This step aims to improve transparency, eliminate favoritism, and ensure that students receive marks purely based on merit. The decision will apply to all educational boards operating in the province and will affect practical examinations conducted in science subjects.
According to officials, the written portion of practical exams will now be checked through a centralized marking system managed by the respective educational boards. Previously, examiners at examination centers had significant control over awarding marks, which sometimes led to concerns regarding fairness and transparency.
With the introduction of centralized marking, practical exam answer sheets containing written responses will be sent directly to board examiners for evaluation. This means the boards themselves will assess the theoretical component of the practical examination rather than relying on the teachers present at the examination centers.
Education authorities believe that this step will bring uniformity in the marking process and minimize the chances of undue influence during examinations.
Under the revised system, the role of examiners present at the practical exam centers will be significantly restricted. While they will still supervise the practical activities, their authority to award marks will be limited.
The total 30 marks allocated to practical examinations will now be divided into two parts. The written portion will be checked by the board through the centralized system, while examiners at the centers will only award marks for viva and practical performance.
This change is expected to ensure that the majority of the marks are awarded through a standardized evaluation process rather than subjective judgment.
The new policy will be implemented in practical examinations of major science subjects, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Studies. These subjects traditionally include laboratory work and practical demonstrations as part of the examination process.
Education authorities say the revised marking method will strengthen the credibility of practical exams, which have often been criticized for being too lenient or inconsistent in the past.
Students appearing in board examinations will now be required to demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to secure higher marks.
The reform has been introduced following concerns that the previous system allowed recommendations or preferential treatment to influence practical exam results. By shifting the evaluation of written practical work to a centralized system, the government hopes to remove any possibility of bias.
Officials believe that this move will ensure that every student is judged fairly and that marks are awarded strictly according to performance.
Education experts have welcomed the decision, stating that centralized marking will help standardize evaluation criteria across different examination centers. This will also ensure that students from various schools are assessed under the same guidelines.
The chairman of the Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen Task Force Committee, Muzammil Mahmood, explained the rationale behind the new policy.
He stated that merely conducting formal or oral practical examinations without proper evaluation will no longer be acceptable. According to him, the new system will ensure that practical examination marks reflect the actual abilities and knowledge of students.
He further emphasized that the government is committed to strengthening the education system by introducing transparent and merit-based assessment methods.
Education authorities believe that the revised system will encourage students to prepare more seriously for practical exams. Since the written component will now be evaluated by board examiners, students will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of laboratory procedures, observations, and concepts.
The new policy is also expected to increase the credibility of board examination results and restore confidence among students, parents, and educational institutions.
Experts say that improving the practical exam system is an important step toward enhancing the overall quality of education in the province.
The policy will be implemented across all educational boards operating in Punjab, ensuring a uniform system of practical exam marking throughout the province.
Authorities have already begun preparing guidelines and procedures to implement the centralized marking system effectively in upcoming board examinations.
With this reform, the Punjab government aims to strengthen transparency, promote fairness, and ensure that academic results truly reflect students’ knowledge and performance.
