The Punjab Government has officially partnered with tech giant Google to launch free IT certification courses for over 100,000 students across the province. The initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, marks one of the largest public-private ed-tech collaborations in Pakistan’s history.
The decisions were finalized during a high-level meeting in Lahore, where officials outlined a comprehensive roadmap for education reforms, including scholarships, infrastructure upgrades, and performance monitoring systems.
Under the flagship initiative, students in Punjab will gain access to professional Google certification courses that typically cost between $400 and $1,000 on the open market. These courses will be provided at zero cost to eligible students, removing financial barriers to high-quality tech education.
The curriculum spans high-demand fields such as:
Cybersecurity
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Business Intelligence
Course durations range from three to six months, allowing students to upskill rapidly and enter the workforce with globally recognized credentials. A senior official noted that this partnership with Google is expected to bridge the digital skills gap in the province, particularly in underserved districts.
To complement the online courses, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the establishment of state-of-the-art IT laboratories in 166 government colleges across Punjab. These labs will provide hands-on training and internet access, ensuring students can utilize the Google certifications effectively.
Furthermore, a new performance evaluation system will be introduced. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will now be used to assess:
Principals and teachers
Educational institutions
Vice-chancellors of public universities
This data-driven approach aims to improve accountability and academic outcomes across the board.
In a separate but related reform, the government expanded the Honhaar Scholarship Program. For the first time, approval has been granted to award scholarships to 62,949 students simultaneously.
Authorities have been directed to ensure all eligible students are included, with funds to be released in phases to avoid administrative delays. The move is expected to benefit talented but underprivileged students pursuing higher education.
The Punjab Government also approved the affiliation of 36 commerce colleges across 29 districts with 19 public universities. This affiliation will allow students to enroll in 14 new BS programs in high-demand subjects, including:
Business Administration
Finance
Information Technology (IT)
E-commerce
This expansion is designed to modernize commerce education and align it with current market needs.
Recognizing logistical challenges, the government approved the introduction of electric bus services exclusively for students. These eco-friendly buses will provide safe and affordable transportation, particularly for female students in rural areas.
In the second phase of the laptop scheme, the government has decided to include special students and minority students on an open merit basis. Officials reported that over 38,000 students benefited from the first phase, while more than 142,000 applications have already been received for the next phase.
Officials briefed the meeting on recent assessment results, revealing that approximately 994,000 students appeared in Grade 8 examinations. The overall pass rate stood at 92% for female students compared to 84% for male students.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz highlighted that female students secured the top three positions, praising their performance as a sign of progress in girls’ education.
The Chief Minister issued directives to authorities to take immediate steps for improving educational institutions in Sargodha and other lagging districts. This includes upgrading infrastructure, filling vacant teaching posts, and ensuring the timely rollout of the Google IT courses in those regions.
“Education is the most powerful weapon for change. Through our partnership with Google, we are not just teaching students; we are certifying them for global careers,” CM Maryam Nawaz stated during the meeting.

The Punjab Government’s multi-pronged strategy combining free Google IT courses, new labs, scholarships, transport, and laptops represents a holistic approach to education reform. With over 100,000 students set to benefit from the Google partnership alone, the initiative is poised to make Punjab a hub for digital talent in South Asia.
