In a monumental shift toward modernizing public education, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has formally approved a comprehensive new school curriculum. Designed to alleviate the heavy physical and psychological baggage carried by students, the landmark education reforms feature a 25% reduction in textbooks, a robust transition away from archaic rote learning, and the sweeping integration of digital technologies.

The decision was finalized during a high-level special meeting on education reforms held in Lahore. During the session, senior officials from the Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) presented the structured framework of the revised syllabus, setting a progressive tone for public schooling across the province.

Overhauling Core Subjects and Eliminating Rote Learning

The newly approved curriculum spans essential foundational subjects, including English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Urdu, and Early Childhood Education (ECE). For decades, the public school framework in Pakistan has heavily relied on memorization-based learning, forcing students to cram text without grasping core concepts.

Under CM Maryam Nawaz’s directives, the newly formulated educational modules aim to foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and conceptual clarity. By reducing the volume of books by 25 percent, the government intends to make school bags lighter and learning processes more engaging.

To bridge the gap between traditional textbooks and digital interactivity, the newly printed books will incorporate advanced QR codes. Students can scan these codes using mobile devices or tablets to directly access comprehensive video lessons covering complex topics. This hybrid learning model ensures that children receive visual and practical explanations alongside their standard texts.

Pioneering Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Literacy

Recognizing the fast-paced global shift toward digital economies, the Punjab government has placed technology at the center of its educational roadmap. CM Maryam Nawaz issued strict directives to authorities to develop a specialized Artificial Intelligence curriculum spanning from Grade 1 to Grade 12.

This progressive AI framework will introduce students to foundational computing, data science, machine learning, robotics, and ethical AI governance from an early age. To ensure these subjects are taught effectively rather than remaining purely theoretical, the government has mandated the establishment of high-tech computer and science laboratories across public schools.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister ordered that the printing and distribution of all revised textbooks be completed well before March, ensuring that classrooms are fully equipped ahead of the upcoming academic session. Emphasizing the importance of early-years education, she noted that prioritizing primary schooling creates an unshakeable foundation for future academic success.

Focusing on Teacher Training, Mental Health, and Student Welfare

Beyond academics, the historic education reform package addresses critical student welfare and educator development components:

• Teacher Training Initiatives: Saturdays have been officially designated as dedicated weekly training days for educators across Punjab. Intriguingly, the authors of the new textbooks will personally conduct these training sessions to ensure seamless transmission of the curriculum's core philosophy. Additionally, English-language proficiency training has already been successfully completed for 35,000 teachers across 31 tehsils in 12 districts.

• Mental Health and Counseling: In a first-of-its-kind initiative for the province, the meeting approved specialized mental health training programs for teachers. Proposals to appoint visiting psychologists in every district and establish online counseling facilities for students were also comprehensively reviewed.

• Eradication of Corporal Punishment: Taking a firm stance on student protection, the government reached a firm consensus on strict legislation to completely eliminate corporal punishment in schools. Highlighting that physical abuse leaves lifelong psychological scars, authorities evaluated alternative behavioral management frameworks, such as introducing "discipline corners" within classrooms.

Rebuilding Public Trust in State Education

Concluding the session, CM Maryam Nawaz reiterated that the state possesses ample resources for the educational sector, but emphasized that structural wastage must be blocked to maximize utility. By introducing cutting-edge digital literacy, interactive QR-coded textbooks, and holistic mental health care systems, the Punjab government aims to position its public school network competitively on a global scale.
