Islamabad: In spite of full funding and high claims of the government, Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has attained an embarrassing score of 9.2 in the very first Higher Education System Strength Rankings 2016 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).  This bad ranking of HEC placed the country at the bottom of the table.

The ranking list issued by well-known Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international ranking body based in the United Kingdom, ranked India at number 24 along with 60.9 points. Even Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Lebanon as well as the little state of Estonia scored better as compared to Pakistan.


Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission has been ranked at bottom along with only 9.2 scores.


The ranking judges every state in four classes i-e, system strength, access, top institution, and economic context, joining university rankings along with the range of other statistics to give a larger image of national strengths in higher education provision and in performance as well.

The very first of the classes that is system strength”, is based on the number of institutes featured in the international rankings. Second one, access, reflects the number of places that are available at the globally ranked universities. The third one, “leading institution”, judges the performance of every top leading institute of the country. The 4th, “economic background”, factors performance in the international rankings against GDP each capital, to give a sign of the level to which financial investment is translating into ranking depiction.

Out of 50 countries that are included in the, approximately 22 of them are in Europe. The UK, Germany, France and Netherlands, which all make their positions in top ten whereas Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and Finland make their space in top 20.

This latest ranking that is published for the very first time this year, joins QS’s larger group of university rankings. Formerly, as per the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report 2015-16 , under the chairpersons of Higher Education and Training, ranking of Pakistan is way down at 124th out of 140 states as compared to India at 90th position, Bangladesh at 122nd position, Nepal at 113rd position, China at 28th position, Iran at 69th position, Bhutan at 103rd, Qatar at 27th ranked, UAE at 37th and Saudi Arabia at 49th position.
