Lahore: The chairperson of Higher Education Commission on Thursday said that, Pakistan is facing a shortage of almost 36,000 PhDs in various zones and to serve the purpose the government requirements to considerably increase the higher education budget.

While addressing a group of journalists from Islamabad at Government College University (GCU) Lahore, HEC chairperson said that after the 18th amendment, the provincial higher education commissions had become a truth so there was no fight among the federal and provincial higher education commissions.

“We must define the role of provincial higher education commissions to end this misperception and the issue will be solved in the Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting,” he said.

The vice chancellor of Government college University Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah supported the HEC chairperson.

“Though the federal and provincial higher education commissions might be good for the universities, the major subsidy of universities came from the federal government,” said VC.

At the same time, Dr Mukhtar, showed concerns over the rising violent incidents at university campuses. “This is something which is really serious. The matter of extremism in the educational institutes is being given special attention,” he added while referring to the cruel lynching of a student, Mashal Khan in Mardan.

“We are producing scientists, doctors as well as engineers however we also have to ask ourselves whether we are producing good persons or not.
