ISLAMABAD, A convocation was held at the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for 28 scholars who returned from South Korea after completing their MS engineering degrees.

The scholars pursued their higher studies at Hanyang University, Seoul National University and Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology since September 2008.

According to an HEC media official, so far 159 scholars have completed their MS engineering in leading universities of South Korea and returned to Pakistan.

The official said the scholars had done research in 12 fields of engineering and some of them produced world-class research papers which were accepted for publication in international journals.

Speaking on the occasion, the ambassador of South Korea Choi Coong-Joo appreciated the efforts of the HEC for creating a knowledge-based economy which was key to development of any country.

“The MS engineering programme will enhance the academic and industrial collaboration of Pakistan and South Korea which have so much to share,” said the ambassador.

He said South Korea gave great importance to human resource development during the early days of its development.

Federal Minister of Sciences and Technology Pir Aftab Shah Jilani lauded the hard work of Pakistani students for completion of the degrees from South Korea. “You can become agents of change,” he said.

The HEC chairman, Dr Javed Leghari, added: “HEC selected the best engineering graduates for the programme and sent them to those South Korean universities which are ranked among the best in the world.”
