New online system for admissions to public & private nursing schools

Lahore: For the very first time, the admissions to all nursing schools across the province have been allowed through a central online system.

The merit lists of all the nursing schools have been displayed as well on the official website of the Punjab Nursing Admissions website, said the representative of Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department on Wednesday.

The representative furthermore added that:

 “Out of total 1,665 seats in 43 nursing schools, 516 seats are filled on open merit, 1,089 closed quota seats are filled by the applicants belonging to under-developed regions, 44 seats by lady health visitors or midwives whereas the departmental seats are 16.”

For the last couple of years, the applicants were being admitted to undergraduate courses (MBBS as well as BDS programs) in the government sector medical and dental colleges under a centralized system.

This year, it has been made necessary for the private sector medical and dental educational institutes also to admit aspirants on the basis of a centralized merit list.

In May, a central orientation policy for the postgraduate training at the teaching institutes was introduced. Up till now, two orientations have been made for the postgraduate training through entrance test under Punjab Residency programme.

About the new system, the secretary of Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Najam Ahmed Shah said this step was targeted at further improving the quality of medical as well as nursing education by guaranteeing merit and transparency so that the medical professionals of international standard could be produced to meet the future challenges.

The transparency as well as the merit in medical education will ultimately result in providing better quality healthcare to masses, particularly at government sector hospitals, Mr Shah said, adding that the system had been evolved in association along with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).

He stated that the new system will eradicate the chances of any kind of negative practice and only transparency and merit will exist.
