Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) as well as Ministry of IT arranged a full day workshop on the effective use of ICTs for development along with the Professor Tim Unwin, UNESCO Chair in ICT4D, at National IT Board located in Islamabad.

The workshop comprised four sessions on local content development, association along with the international research partners, competition policy, as well as the developing business models. The opening session comprises of the speeches by Professor Tim Unwin, UNESCO Chair in ICT4D, Mr. Azmat Ali Ranjha, Secretary IT, and Dr. Ismail Shah, Chairman PTA. PSEB also presented a documentary it has produced to support the IT industry of Pakistan which was very much valued by the audience present there. Professor Unwin talked regarding how ICTs can be utilized to enhance the lives of the demoted zones of society. However, he also mentioned that economic growth can lead to more inequity among the haves or the have-nots.

During his address Dr. Ismail talked about that how Pakistan Telecommunication authority is working along with the operators to make the new mobile applications for the disabled as well as for the handicapped. Secretary IT talked regarding few attainment of Ministry of IT last year comprising of 25 million broadband users, 40 percent increase in Information Technology transfers, nine USF projects in underserved regions, as well as the implementation of file automation in the ministry accompanied by the ten other ministries.

This workshop was also attended by MD PSEB, ED NITB, Member HR, and Member Telecom from Ministry of Information Technology, as well as the guests from the various ministries, IT and telecom companies, and also the academia. Ministry of Information Technology plans on appealing more international speakers in future to talk regarding the developing trends in Information Technology as well as the telecom and to educate these visitors regarding the high growth potential in IT of Pakistan.
