Lahore has become one of the most affected regions of Pakistan in Coronavirus followed by Rawalpindi for COVID-19. These were the remarks of Punjab Health Minister Dr. Yasmin Rashid looking at the current situation. She put out these remarks in front of the media yesterday when she was addressing them at the Primary and Secondary health care department. Along with Dr. Yasmeen, the P&SHD special secretary Ajmal Bhatti and CEO Mayo Hospital Dr. Asad Aslam were also attending that press conference.

Latest COVID-19 Figures in Punjab.

She added in her remarks that just in Punjab confirmed cases of COVID-19 patients are 43460 and in the last 24 hours more than 725 cases have been tested positive of COVID-19 in Punjab. Over 7 thousand people have recovered from it and 807 people died due to Coronavirus. In the last 24 hours over 34 people died due to Covid-19 just in Punjab.

According to the Health Minister of Punjab, Dr. Yasmin over 2.5 lakh tests were conducted in Punjab and over the course of the last 24 hours, 6371 tests are being done. Lahore is the worst affected area of Punjab with 21581 positive cases followed by Rawalpindi with 3480 cases, Gujranwala 1885 cases, Faisalabad 3045 cases, and Multan with 1,200 positive cases.  
 
She added in her remarks that the Punjab province has conducted the highest number of contact tests than any other province in Pakistan. Due to these Contact tracing, over 5000 patients have been added to the total.

What lies in the Future for Lahore?

Dr. Yasmin clearly said in her press conference that if we want to stay safe in this situation we have to follow all the guidelines that are given by WHO (World health organization). We have to intensify contact tracing and it will help us to control the spread of COVID-19. She said all the rumors that are being spread about government hospital facilities and resources are false.

The Serious cases that Punjab is dealing with are 251 in which 119 are in Lahore, 113 in Rawalpindi, 16 in Faisalabad, and 3 in Muzaffargarh. All the patients’ data is being reviewed on a daily basis at the Corona Command and control center. Over 500 beds are available in Lahore and all of these beds are going to be allotted to critically ill people.
 

What steps are being taken by the Punjab Government to control this disease?

Right now the cabinet committee on Corona wants to conduct smart sampling in Punjab general population with a special focus on Lahore. To take such actions Dr. Mahboob ul Haq head of Center for Economic research LUMS is working with Centre for International Development Harvard University, London School of Economics, Universities from Georgetown and Washington jointly worked with the government of Punjab to do smart sampling.
 
According to them, smart sampling shows the ratio of 5.8% positive cases in Lahore which is more than any other city of Punjab. Just because of that the scale of the treatment facility has been increased in Lahore.
 
Dr. Yasmin said that if people start wearing masks regularly it will reduce 40% chances of COVID-19 spread. For this, they are going to start a mass awareness campaign all over Punjab. Punjab has over 1500 ventilators and we hope that with this campaign we are never going to need them. Hopefully! We are going to overcome this Pandemic.
