The Inter-Board Coordination Committee (IBCC) has officially announced a nationwide initiative to distribute Chromebooks to students securing outstanding results in matriculation and intermediate examinations .
Under this ambitious scheme, a total of 500,000 high-achieving students affiliated with education boards across all provinces and regions will receive free Chromebooks, marking one of the largest student reward programs in the country’s history.
The IBCC, which serves as the regulatory body coordinating functions between all educational boards in Pakistan, confirmed that the program is designed to acknowledge academic excellence while simultaneously bridging the digital divide in the country.
According to the official statement issued by the IBCC secretariat, students who achieve top grades in their Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) examinations will be eligible for the Chromebook scheme.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to nurturing talent and preparing the youth for a technology-driven future,” an IBCC spokesperson said. “By providing Chromebooks, we are not only rewarding hard work but also equipping students with the tools necessary to excel in the digital era.”
The scale of the project is unprecedented. With half a million devices set to be distributed, the IBCC Chromebook scheme is poised to become one of South Asia’s largest student-centric technology disbursement programs.
Education policy analysts view this as a critical intervention. Pakistan has faced persistent challenges in integrating information technology into mainstream education, with many students lacking access to personal computing devices. This initiative directly addresses that gap by placing digital tools directly into the hands of high-performing students.
The Chromebooks, known for their lightweight design, long battery life, and seamless integration with cloud-based educational applications, are expected to significantly enhance students’ capacity for online research, virtual collaboration, and skill development.
Officials familiar with the project emphasize that the Chromebook distribution is not merely a reward mechanism but a strategic investment in human capital development.
“The traditional classroom model is evolving globally, and Pakistan must keep pace,” explained a senior IBCC official who requested anonymity as the distribution details are being finalized. “These Chromebooks will enable students to access massive open online courses, international research publications, coding platforms, and digital libraries resources that were previously beyond reach for many.”

Coordinating with more than 30 educational boards, ensuring timely procurement of devices, and managing delivery to remote and conflict-affected areas will require meticulous planning.
Moreover, infrastructure gaps particularly unreliable electricity and limited internet connectivity in rural regions—may hinder the optimal utilization of the Chromebooks. The IBCC has indicated that it is in consultation with provincial authorities and telecommunication providers to address these challenges through supplementary interventions.
