On Tuesday, 1st January, 2019 Government College University Lahore completed its 155th year of establishment. The 155th birth Anniversary of GCU was celebrated grandly at its Amphie Theatre. The event was graced with presence of University’s VC, Academic heads, Administration and Old Ravians. A Founders’ Day cake cutting ceremony was held, the current VC of GCU Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah cut the cake and addressed with the attendants.

The VC said, that GCU has contributed greatly to Pakistan’s educational field, it has produced exceptional graduates who went on to become Pakistan’s prominent figures, literary figures, politicians, scientists, Nobel Laureates, four prime ministers of Pakistan, jurists, sportsmen and artists.GCU has instilled its students with attributes of co existence, tolerance and is committed to do better in the future.

The Government College University Lahore is the oldest educational institution of Pakistan. Its humble beginning was with just 9 students, 3 teachers and firm conviction to deliver quality education. GCU is now offering academic programmes and courses in Science and Technology, Arts and Social Sciences, Languages, Islamic and Oriental Learning and Engineering.

The VC said, ‘Poet of East Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, N.M Rashid, Patras Bukhari, Ashfaq Ahmad, Qudsia Bano; Nobel Laureates Prof Dr Abdus Salam and Prof Dr Hargobind Khorana, Chief Justice M. R. Kyani, Chief Justice Naseem Hassan Shah are all proud Old Ravains. The present Chief Justice of Pakistan, Respected Justice Saqib Nisar and former Army Chief General (r) Raheel Sharif are also old GCU students.

Elaborating the rich historical background of GCU the VC further said that GCU was affiliated to Calcutta University initially and there was not a single University in this region of sub-continent India at that time. He said,’ the college was established on the manner World’s Known Universities such as: Cambridge and Oxford and it was available in historical records that it was decided that all students of this college would be given 10 to 15 rupees scholarship per annum, implementing that during the first year of GC, the fee of the college was Rs2 per annum, which was deducted from the scholarships of the students’.

Over the years GCU has achieved various milestones and awards for its academic contribution ans performance. The university has collaborative relationship with a number of international Universities and runs various scholarships programmes and student exchange programmes. GCU is highly ranked by HEC annual rankings and international world university rankings.

On the Occasion, the VC of GCU paid tribute to first principle of GC, Dr Leitner. He said, ‘ the academic and administrative leadership is resolute to maintain wonderful traditions of academic excellence set by its ancestors, research, promotion of new ideas and above all, respect for others’ belief and views, last year the international ranking of the university had improved besides it witnessed an increase in research publication and appointment of senior faculty members’.

It would be appropriate to mention here, GCU has always managed to avoid indulging in controversies and corruption. Even the current anti corruption campaign failed to find any deformity and misconduct in GCU.
