Karachi, University of Karachi (KU) is keen in ensuring quality education in Pakistan. One component of it is the availability of quality teachers. In consideration of this requirement, KU has taken an initiative and is commencing a four year B.Ed. programme in collaboration with the Pre-Service Teacher Education Programme (PRE-STEP), spokesperson KU said on Wednesday.

Vice Chancellor, KU, organised a meeting in this regard, which was also attended by the Vice Chancellor of Sindh University Prof. Dr Nazir A. Mughal, Dand others.

The main objectives of the programe, as identified by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, are to develop a coherent policy framework for teacher education and professional development that will serve as a tool to link and coordinate the national policies and frameworks with those at the provincial level, he further said. It also includes the collaboration on the development of new standards and programme for teachers to upgrade their qualification. It was decided in the meeting that a four-year B.Ed programme will be initiated in January 2011 while, 15 scholarships of Rs.40, 000 will be awarded to the students on the basis of merit and performance, he said.

According to Professor Dr Shakeel Farooqi, University will receive a grant of 50, 000 dollars other than the grants of those 40, 000 dollars which are given for the launching of the programme and which will be delivered within the period of three years, he added.
