Lahore, A large number of FC College, Lahore students on Monday staged a protest demonstration against the varsity administration for barring them from appearing in the intermediate annual examination 2011 as regular students.

They organized the demonstration outside the varsity campus near the Canal Road to protest the university decision, saying the administration had withheld their admissions on the basis of short attendance, terming it great injustice. They claimed the number of students whose admissions had been withheld was over 300. Each year the issue surfaces when colleges withhold admission of students in the wake of short attendance in lectures (below 75 percent), a requirement imposed by the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore.

The protesting students alleged that many of them, who had been barred from appearing in the exam as regular students of the college, had genuine reasons for short attendance and they had submitted applications in this regard but no body was ready to listen to them and address their grievances.

It is pertinent to mention that the last date for sending admission forms for intermediate examination 2011 has passed, making the issue more complex. It is learnt that FC College principal Dr Christy Munir also met BISE Lahoreís chairman Prof Dr Akram Kashmiri and discussed the possibility of sending late admissions of the students who had genuine reasons for short attendance. When contacted, FC College registrar Dr

Hamid Saeed said he was unaware about the total number of students whose admissions were withheld. However, he added, last year the court had decided in favour of the college when some students had moved the court against the similar decision. ìWe are just following rules set by the BISE Lahoreî, he added.

Dr Christy Munir, when contacted, said the college had withheld admission of around 150 to 200 students owing to short attendance in lectures. He said the parents and students were requested not to agitate as the college was following the rules. He said the administration was digging out the facts so that those having genuine reasons for short attendance might not suffer. To a question, he said the BISE chairman had assured him that the cases forwarded by the FC College for admission would be considered.
