The Vise Chancellor of the University of Health sciences, Dr Javed Akram, told the press that every year almost 100 billion rupees are being spent on research programs in Pakistan, but its commercialization has never been done. The VC said that the commission has directed the Ministry of National Health Services to establish a committee by January 15, 2019 for the purpose of ensuring clinical trials of researches.

The researches conducted by higher education institutions in health sector and biotechnology sector can benefit a general consumer greatly. The products innovated by researchers are cost effective and save 10 to 20 percent cost spent by the consumer. Commercialization will contribute in stabilizing the economy of Pakistan and also bring revenue to Pakistan’s research institutions. The commercialization of research breakthroughs was previously discouraged due to pressure of international companies, but this time if it happens, Pakistan’s research field can benefit both economically and academically.

The VC Dr, Javed Akran further commented, he said,’ When I was vice chancellor at the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University, a research study was started to make artificial skin since, according to a study, the ratio of burn injury cases was the highest in Pakistan, After becoming UHS vice chancellor, I shifted the research to this institution and finally we came up with artificial skin in our laboratory last year. We contacted Drape for issuance of license for commercial manufacturing, but it was not done, we could have manufactured artificial skin and reduced mortality from 70pc to 40pc’.

He said that the artificial skin is being sold at the rate of $700 per square inch but if the research made by Pakistan is commercialized it can be sold for just Rs710. The notice has been taken and soon research breakthroughs will be commercialized for commoner’s consumption and it is certainly a great news for general public and researchers of Pakistan.
