ISLAMABAD: The BE (Telecommunications) students of Allama Iqbal
Open University (AIOU) warned that they would besiege the vice chancellor’s
offices in case their suspended course was not restarted within 48 hours. A couple
of the BE students gathered on the AIOU main campus to protest the ‘sudden
and unwarranted’ closure of their course.
Amidst shouts against the AIOU vice chancellor, the students demanded that the
Education Ministry step in to undo the injustice done to them and protect their
future from possible ruin. They leveled charges of corruption and misuse of powers
against VC Mehmoodul Hassan Butt. They, later speaking to a news conference, said
the AIOU had launched the BE (Telecommunications) course in 2000 during a function,
which was chaired by the then education minister, Zobaida Jalal. They said 950
students had so far obtained the degrees, while 350 students had yet to complete
the course.
They said they planned laying siege to the VC offices in the next 48 hours if
their demands were not met. They, however, said they wouldn’t go violent.
