Islamabad: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and Skill Development Council (SDC) on Wednesday signed an agreement for the promotion of skill-based education, permitting the people to earn their livelihood as well as to assist the country in its social-economic development.


According to the signed agreement, the University will introduce short-term technical courses for industrial workers as well as for fresh graduates.


The vice chancellor of university Dr. Shahid Siddiqui while addressing signing ceremony said that the launching of the new course is targeted at bridging the skill-gap between technical institutions and industries. The ceremony was also addressed by the chairperson of SDC Khalid Rehman.

A well-equipped lab will be established at the main campus of AIOU to equip the aspirants along with the latest technology and advanced software that are being utilized in automobile and engineering industry.

At first, it would be a 1 year pilot project that will primarily facilitate the people of Rawalpindi-Islamabad as well as of Lahore regions. This training program will be a sort of in-house job internship for the fresh graduates. 

Dr. Shahid Siddiqui said that the varsity is busy in promoting its collaborative partnership along with the national as well as international institutes for its capacity-building to meet the current requirements of its aspirants.

VC furthermore said that the developing countries like Pakistan needed to overcome knowledge and skill space in their educational system for bringing them at par together with the developed countries. A literate and technically well-equipped manpower could be an actual source for socio-economic development. AIOU being a Mega University is desirous to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard.

The agreement was signed by the Registrar of University Muhammad Dr Muhammad Naeem Qureshi and head of SDC Khalid Rehman. Dean Sciences Nagmana Rashid gave a briefing on the planned technical programs on the event.
