The power of education and the progressive teaching techniques were the over-arching themes of the important addresses at the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Research and Practices on Education organized at Allama Iqbal Open University on Tuesday (yesterday).

The 2-day conference is being organized by Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), where the participants from more than twenty 20 universities presented 170 research papers.

The vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University Shahid Siddiqui said that most developing nations still held a conservative concept of education.

The main speaker, Professor Lynn Fendler from the University of Michigan, spoke of critical curriculum concepts for teachers’ education. She furthermore gave the example of the successful Venezuelan ‘El Sistema’ programme, which provides the music training to the deprived and needy children to highlight the importance of the practical teaching techniques.

She also presented the case of Maria Montessori, the Italian teacher whose techniques of utilizing the environment to teach the poor children developed into the primary education format. While conversing, she said that fatefully, the access to Montessori had become more famous between the relatively privileged.
