Lahore: The A-level students planning a career in medical field suffered a major shock to their future because the new regulations of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) have declared them ineligible for the admissions to MBBS and BDS programmes at any government and private sector medical and dental colleges across the country on foreign quota.

This important issue had been raised in a recent meeting of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council in which it was informed that its regulations introduced last year in October 2016 had now been notified, announcing A-level student’s ineligible to choose medical field.

An official privy to the development told the media sources that the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council meeting headed by the federal minister Saira Afzal Tarrar announced that A-level students of Pakistan will not be eligible to get admissions against foreign seats to any public or private sector medical college.

“No applicant shall be eligible for foreign quota seats in government or private sector medical and dental educational institutes under sub-regulations (1) and (2) unless he holds a permanent international nationality or dual nationality or overseas Pakistani students and who have physically studied and passed their SSC and HSSC level exams or equivalent exams from outside Pakistan during his stay abroad and having a certificate from the educational institute last attended to this effect,” the official said, mentioning the regulations.

He said, in the past the students along with the A level qualifications were getting admission to private medical as well as dental educational institutes in Pakistan under the 2013 PMDC Regulations according to which “The Pakistani national student who has passed an examination which is equivalent to inter level of Pakistan from a foreign university or examining body or foreign education system along with the three subjects out of which biology and chemistry are the important subjects shall be eligible to appear in the entry test for the admission to MBBS/BDS” programme.

The official furthermore added that large number of aspirants passed A-level exams annually from English-medium schools in Pakistan. Many of them appeared for MBBS and BDS programmes.
