Karachi, The University of Karachi distributed EU (European Union) scholarships to seven candidates at a ceremony.  KU vice chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Qaiser presided over the ceremony.

The receivers of the scholarships are Mariya Khan (assistant registrar, BASR section), Waqar Ahmed (environmental studies), Muhammad Faisal Awan (department of international relations), Saima Malhi (department of pharmacy), Amber Atta (department of chemistry, HEJ), Nafees Anwar Siddiqui (department of statistics) and M. Irfan (department of chemistry, HEJ).

Speaking at the ceremony, the vice chancellor said that the University of Karachi was one of the leading institutions of higher learning and research in Pakistan and counted among the top universities of the world.

Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi said that the KU was the first Pakistani university to be selected as a group member of the EU project, Erasmus Mundus Europe Asia.

The ceremony to this effect was organized by Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi, the Coordinator of Karachi University-Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Program funded through European Union Project- EMEA2.

Dr. Qaiser said that these talented recipients would act as ambassadors of Pakistan at their respective foreign universities, and were testament to the fact that Karachi University's education standards were at par with the academic quality of institutions abroad.

Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi along with several deans and chairperson of teaching departments as well as the Registrar were also present on the occasion.

The Vice Chancellor added that he believed that the university would continue helping students in this regard in the future. On the occasion Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi explained that Karachi University had first submitted proposals for the concerned foreign program which was then approved by the European Union (EU) after passing the strict requirements for the university's proficiency in the field of research.

The fact needs to be emphasized that Karachi University was the first Pakistani university to be selected as a group member of the EU project Erasmus Mundus Europe Asia. Seven candidates were awarded the scholarships.

Dr. Shahana appreciated the keen efforts of KU faculty who trained these students to be able to compete in the international scholarship program. The scholarships are fully funded and duration from one month administrative training to 34 months research in European universities for BS, MS, M.Phil, Ph.D. research work.
