Lahore, The 22nd convocation of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) was held at the varsity’s sports complex on Saturday.

The central speaker at the convocation was PepsiCo Inc Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer Dr Mehmood Khan, where he is responsible for leading the company’s global research and development (R&D) functions. LUMS Pro-Chancellor Syed Babar Ali and Rector Razzaq Daud were also present at the occasion. Various degrees were awarded to 626 students, which included 203 graduates, 423 undergraduates and 20 law graduates. Speaking on the occasion Khan said that learning had been a continuous process. He said Pakistan had been facing critical times and there was an economic crunch in the country, as well as it was hit by unprecedented funds. He also spoke about how reinventing one’s self was vital throughout one’s career.

Khan emphasised the importance of aspiring to be a leader, saying the eagerness to learn should be there throughout, along with humility in order to be successful in life.

Later at the ceremony, degrees were awarded to the graduates. Also on the occasion, the governing body at LUMS, the National Management Foundation, awarded gold and silver medals to graduates securing top positions in various programmes.

LUMS is also celebrating 25 years of academic excellence this year.

Separately, the traditional graduate night dinner was held on Friday where the graduates achieving distinctions in various subject and those making it to the coveted dean’s honour list were awarded medals and shields. Around 67 graduating students made it to the dean’s honour list this time around and received corporate gold medals, in the presence of their proud parents and teachers, who warmly appreciated their achievements by cheering and applauding for them.

The ceremony concluded in the evening with a formal dinner organised in the lawns of LUMS. As part of LUMS 25 year’s celebrations, the first two alumni batches (MBA 1988, MBA 1989) were also invited to the graduate night dinner.

The idea was that the current alumni batch gets a chance to see the first ever batch of the varsity, which contributed largely to the success and repute of their alma mater making it the LUMS of today.

The senior alumni got a chance to talk to the graduating classes and shared their student life at LUMS, fond memories, experiences and how the institution had made a difference to their life.
