Lahore, The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) has bagged third position in Lahore out of 14 public and private universities and education institution for producing 101 research papers in peer-reviewed journals indexed by Thomas-Reuters, lSI Web of Knowledge in 2009.

It is interesting to note that University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences got 12th position in the ranking among 82 public private universities across the country. It was just because of teacher’s dedication towards research and providing research environment for the students to do in respective disciplines. So that’s why UVAS achieved remarkable success to produce 101 research papers as against 26 publications during 2008. In 2007, UVAS research publications stood at 11.

The University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore was on 6th position with 52 publications in Lahore while Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) secured 7th positions.

The spokesman says that university’s research publications increased tremendously because of UVAS vice-chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz’ dynamic leadership and his vision to announce an incentive of Rs20, 000 for each publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Meanwhile, the UVAS has also won the World Veterinary Day Award for 2010 announced by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Veterinary Association (WVA) for its contribution to the celebration of World Veterinary Day.

VC Prof Nawaz has appreciated the faculties’ staff over the remarkable achievement due to their untiring efforts and dedication towards research activities.

The VC has said that the university is introducing six new degree programs for graduate level and offering Masters and PhD in 21 disciplines.

Prof Nawaz also said that varsity’s student enrolment had gone up to 2,600 as against 600 some three years ago. He also said that almost 45 per cent veterinarian students of final year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) were grabbing a major share of employment in well-known national and international private companies.

VC Prof Dr Muhammad stated that the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, was one of the oldest Veterinary Institutions in Asia and playing a key role in animal health. Since its inception in 1882, the staff of this Institution has worked enthusiastically and successfully conducted a wide range of programs that have effectively catered the educational and training needs in the field of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. By now it has emerged as one of the famous centers of teaching in Veterinary Education in Asia.
