PESHAWAR: Students from various educational institutions took keen interest here Tuesday on the inaugural day of a three-day book fair at the Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) Hall.

Vice-chancellor, University of Peshawar, Prof Dr Azmat Hayat Khan inaugurated the book fair. Accompanied by principal of Khyber Law College, Prof Dr Adnan Sarwar Khan and Director Area Study Centre, Prof Dr Sarfaraz Khan, the vice-chancellor visited various stalls and bought some books.

The book fair was organized by the Study Aid Foundation for Excellence (SAFE), a student body of the University of Peshawar (UoP). Around 40 stalls of books, embroidery, computer software and other items had been arranged in the spacious PUTA Hall. A large number of male and female students and some faculty members from different universities visited the book fair to buy books on subsidized prices.

All the major publishing houses including Oxford University Press, Pak-American Press, Darus Salam, Islamabad, Idara Matbo’at-e-Talaba, Lahore and others had set up their stalls at the book fair.

The women chapter of Al-Khidmat Foundation had also set up a stall where embroidery, scarves, head shawls and other items for the females were available.Though the number of visitors to the book fair was high, very few among them were seen buying books and other items. Everyone was looking at books, but not buying them.

An organizer at the stall of Pak-American Press was encouraged by the number of students visiting his stall, but he said very few books could be sold on the inaugural day of the fair. He was hopeful that the number of buyers would increase in the next two days. Almost the same was the situation at the Oxford University Press stall.

Shad Mohammad Shaheen, nazim of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT), University Campus, and in-charge SAFE, told this correspondent that the number of buyers always remains low on the first day of book fairs. He said on the first day of such events, the students select books and buy them on the next day. He added that most of the books are sold on the final day of the fair.

He said it was a tradition of the IJT to organize healthy and positive activities for the students. He said that holding of book fair for the students of the University of Peshawar was a regular feature of their organization.

Former central president of IJT Mushtaq Ahmad Khan also visited the book fair. He lauded the organizers for displaying books and other items for the university students at the campus at subsidized prices.
