Overview

Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) - FIA consists of a suite of awards, including certificates, diplomas and a revised Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification. These flexible awards focus on the core skills of financial accounting and management accounting; and the wider role of the accountant in business at higher levels. It provides students with flexible entry points with certification awarded at each level, allowing students to tailor the awards, making them an attractive and relevant choice for employers.

ACCA has introduced a new Route called Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) to achieve its initial Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification. The new route provides the opportunity to complete the CAT qualification or if student wish to give a jumpstart your ACCA qualification it provides the opportunity to avail a new short cut as well. Student can start their career in finance, or want to study the ACCA Professional Scheme and a more senior position in accountancy. Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Scheme will help you towards your choice of career.

The CAT Scheme comprises a combination of exams and practical experience. It is designed to equip you with all the necessary technical skills and knowledge required to fulfill an accounting role to technician level. It also provides a firm foundation of knowledge and the opportunity to fast track towards becoming a professional ACCA accountant. To achieve CAT status you will need to complete a set of exams and one year's practical experience in the workplace. The CAT qualification is internationally recognized and highly regarded. It can lead to a challenging and rewarding career. After completion of the exams and required practical experience student will be able to apply to use the letters CAT after your name.

Completion of Foundations in Professionalism is compulsory for students who wish to be awarded the Introductory and Intermediate certificates in Financial and Management Accounting, the Diploma in Accounting and Business and the CAT. On completion of the CAT Qualification, students may then progress onto the ACCA Qualification if they wish to do so, from F4 onwards. They can also count the three performance objectives and one year's work experience gained to achieve the CAT Qualification towards the three years' work experience required for the ACCA Qualification.

Examination Rules

  • No time constraints for the completion of examinations.
  • Examinations can be attempted twice a year in June and December Sessions respectively.
  • The passing marks are 55% at Introductory Level, 50% at Intermediate Level and 40% at Advanced Level.
  • No limit to the number of papers that can be take, recommended number is four papers at any session Papers can be taken in any order.

Computer Based Examinations

Students have the option to sit in Computer Based Examinations (CBE) for Introductory and Intermediate levels of CAT which are held every month. The computer based examinations allow flexibility to the students in terms of taking examinations at sessions other than the general paper based sessions of June and December. Secondly, students get the results on the spot which also updates their status on ACCA students' database.

Admission Requirements

  • Preferably O levels / Intermediate or Matriculation (With at least 60% marks.
  • Holders of certain qualifications may receive exemptions from some of the papers.
