The Punjab School Education Department (SED) has officially issued a new smart syllabus for Class 9 and Class 10 students across all educational boards in the province. The updated syllabus has been uploaded on the official websites of all Punjab Boards and Ilmkidunya, allowing students and teachers to download it easily.
This new development comes under the directives of Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, who confirmed that the smart syllabus aims to reduce academic burden and ensure that students can prepare effectively for their 2025 annual board exams.
The decision has been welcomed by students, parents, and educators, particularly because it comes at a time when schools have faced interruptions due to weather alerts, smog-related closures, and curriculum adjustments.
According to the School Education Department, the new syllabus was designed to rationalize the curriculum while keeping the essential learning outcomes intact. Over the past few years, students and teachers have repeatedly requested syllabus simplification due to time constraints caused by extended vacations and exam delays.
The Education Minister stated,
“Our goal is to make sure no student is left behind. The smart syllabus focuses on the most important topics that truly matter for board exams. It is time to move towards efficient, conceptual, and stress-free learning.”
This approach is part of Punjab’s broader education reform policy, which focuses on student-centered learning, reduced rote memorization, and modernized teaching methods.
The smart syllabus for 9th and 10th classes (2025) covers core subjects under the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB). These include:
Mathematics
English
Urdu
Physics
Chemistry
Biology
Computer Science
Islamiyat
Pakistan Studies
The smart syllabus excludes repetitive and less significant chapters while focusing on chapters that assess conceptual clarity and analytical understanding.
Teachers have been directed to focus primarily on approved chapters, core exercises, and past paper patterns aligned with the new curriculum.
Each subject’s updated outline is now available for download on:
www.pctb.punjab.gov.pk
The official websites of all Punjab BISE Boards (Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, and DG Khan).
According to Board officials, the 2025 matric annual exams will be strictly based on the new smart syllabus. Students are advised not to prepare from the full textbook, as only the approved portion will be included in the exam papers and objective questions.
The Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen (PBCC) has confirmed that paper setters have already received updated paper patterns and question distribution based on this syllabus.
Students can also expect:
Reduced exam pressure
Shorter paper length
Conceptual MCQs and short questions
Less memorization and more understanding-based questions
This move aims to boost student performance, especially in government schools where syllabus completion is often delayed due to limited academic days.
The announcement of the new syllabus has brought a sense of relief to thousands of matric students across Punjab. Many expressed gratitude that the syllabus reduction would allow them to revise more effectively and perform better in exams.
Ayesha Khalid, a 10th class student from Gujranwala Board, said:
“It’s a great decision. Last year, we struggled to finish all chapters before exams. Now we can focus on key topics and prepare smartly.”
Similarly, teachers have welcomed the move, saying that the smart syllabus gives them clear teaching direction and allows more time for revision and concept clarification.
