Life is a precious gift. It is in your hand, how you want to spend your days on the Earth. If you destroy your time by adopting bad habits, you would gain nothing but loss. Before we move any further, let's first learn how a habit is formed.

How is a habit formed?

A habit, either bad or a good one, is activated in four steps, i.e, Reminder, Routine, Reward, and Repeat. Here is what they are:

  • Reminder: You see someone doing something cool.
  • Routine: You start doing it too.
  • Reward: You love doing it.
  • Repeat: You repeat this action; this action becomes your habit.

Now that you have learned how a habit is activated, here are five bad habits, which you should break immediately. Plus, find out how to replace them with the good ones.

Late-night Smartphone Usage:

Last year, a group of researchers from London suggested that the late-night smartphone usage can leave you temporarily blind. When you use your phone in the night, sometimes you look at it by just using one eye while the other gets covered by your pillow. Then, when you leave your phone, your eye takes some time to adjust with the other eye, which is covered in the darkness. As a result, you become sightless for a few minutes. So, instead of using your phone at night, replace this habit with a healthy one. Try reading a book on the topic that you are interested in.

Gossip:

A lot of people enjoy spreading rumors about others. Gossiping is a sign of a small mind person. Instead of wasting your time by talking about other people's lives, you can talk about something knowledgeable and share interesting ideas with others. Aside from this, you can develop a habit of writing a diary, in which you can share the thoughts about yourself.

Eating fast food all the time:

Some people love burgers, cold drinks, and other such food. But, it is an unhealthy habit and it can make you fat. Also, eating fast food all the time is a waste of money. You can change this habit by eating healthy food. Slowly, replace the burgers by eating the home-cooked meal. When you feel thirsty, instead of grabbing a cold drink, get yourself a glass of water. In this way, you can easily break your bad habit of eating fast food.

Smoking:

If you don't smoke, that's good, but if you do, here is what you should do to break this habit: First, you should realize that the cigarettes don't supernaturally go straight into your body. So, if you decide not to touch them ever again, they won't come into your mouth. You can replace this habit by becoming friends with someone who hates smokers. So, whenever you get tobacco cravings, just go to that friend's house. You will feel awkward to smoke in front of him.

Taking selfies:

It is an era of social media. Nowadays, almost every other person on Facebook loves to share his/her selfie for the purpose of getting "Likes." Two to three selfies in a month are fine, but if you are one of those people who love to take a selfie after every few hours, you should keep in mind that the growing selfie craze is one of the dominant causes of death. Each year, a number of people die by taking their own photos on the locations like railway tracks, mountains, and other dangerous places. You can stop this habit by telling yourself that you don't need other people's opinions about your looks because you know that you look good.
