Punjab Institute of Mental Health was inherited by Pakistan during partition in 1947. During its initial years after partition, there were not adequate facilities and doctors to treat ill patients. But with time the institute flourished into one of the finest mental illness diagnostic and treatment asylum in Pakistan. Currently the institute has 1400 beds facility for in house patients and 600 outpatient facility. The institute is offering services of Emergency, Outdoor, In-door and Rehabilitation. The institute is also running social welfare department and a patient’s welfare society. The institute is serving patients belonging from Lahore and its adjacent areas.

The administrative and clinical staff at the department is team of vigilant and able workers who work with the sole purpose of welfare and rehabilitation of patients. It is governmental institute and all the medicines provided at to patients are free. The institute has adopted many modern techniques and currently more programs to rehabilitate the patients are under construction which include: Continuing Medical Education, Public Awareness Programmers, Establishment of a Library Equipped with the on Line Linkages, Computerization of the Hospital Record with Inter-ward Linkages, Rehabilitation Program for Drug Addicts (Substance Abusers), Establishment of Two Vocational Rehabilitation Centers, Construction of Auditorium for Community Psychiatry, Sports Complex for the Patients and Construction of Musafar Khana for the patient’s attendants. As per the surveys 13% Pakistani population suffer from mental illness. The institute has goal to bring about adequate strategy to eliminate this number and provide mental health awareness in Pakistan.
