Pakistan Meteorological Department’s headquarter is located in Islamabad, capital of Pakistan. It has offices and research facilities in all provinces and territories of the country. It was established in 1947. Dr. Ghulam Rasool is the current Director General of this department. This department is an independent institution that is established with the purpose to provide weather forecasting and public warnings concerning about weather for protection, safety and general information. This department is also involved in various operations including investigations about weather phenomenons, astronomical events, hydrology and research in astrophysics, climate changes and studies in aeronautical engineering.

This department is further divided into several directorates including: Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics, Tropical Cyclone Warning Center, National Seismic Monitoring and Tsunami Early Warning Center and Directorate of forecasting and Climatalogy.
