Islamabad, More than 10,000 schools are fully or partially damaged in the country due to the worst flood of Pakistan history in all over the country and nearly 1,700,000, students were affected who were studying in that schools, said Education Minister Sardar Asif Ahmed Ali. He further said that Federal government will allocate special funds from the foreign aid for the reconstruction of schools.
He added that it was a preliminary estimate of lost it may be vary after the final report. He further said that all provincial governments were advised to submit the report of fully or partially damaged schools and other educational institutes.
According to the report of United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Pakistan (OCHA) published on 23 August approximately 7,820 schools are now reported to have been fully or partially damaged in all over the country and 4,935 schools are being used as relief shelters. According to report of Save the Children US on 20 August, over 5,500 schools have been damaged across the country, while 5,000 others are being used as shelters for displaced families.
According to the Provincial Education Minister of Punjab Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rahman said nearly 4481 schools were affected in Punjab, 702 schools were fully damaged, 3144 schools were partially and 632 schools were little damaged. He further said that in some areas government started to build tent schools to teach children. higher education secretary Ahad Khan Cheema said children who got admission in schools of Lahore and other cities would be provided free of cost education.
Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) General Secretary Iftikhar Aazmi has been quoted by the press as saying in Karachi that “all educational institutes of Sindh, except those of Karachi and Hyderabad, have been disturbed due to the floods.” There were around 26,000 private and public sector schools in the province before the floods, according to education department figures.
