RAWALPINDI: Thirty-eight students of various disciplines were
decorated with medals and over 1,000 graduating students were awarded degrees
at the 9th convocation of University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi (UAAR).
Fourteen PhD scholars were also awarded degrees on successfully completing their
studies.
Punjab Governor and Chancellor of UAAR Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool presided over
the convocation and awarded degrees to students. Higher Education Commission (HEC)
Chairman Dr Attaur Rehman, UAAR Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Mahmood Khan and faculty
members were also present on the occasion.
Maqbool called upon the graduates to apply their knowledge of modern technologies
in practical life. He urged the university faculty members to encourage and facilitate
students in focused research. Besides the conventional agricultural education,
the livestock sector should be emphasised to overcome the food shortage, he added.
He said agriculture was lifeline of Pakistan. Huge population, climate change
and world economic indicators are putting a lot of pressure on our agriculture,
he said, adding, UAAR is playing a leading role in human resource development
to face the agricultural challenges. He asked the university to focus on agricultural
productivity, soil conservation, quality of seeds, water management, agro processing
and waste management.
He also appreciated the HEC for providing financial support to the university
and closely monitoring its progress.
Earlier, Dr Khan said academic departments of UAAR had increased from 11 to 27
with the initiation of Faculty of Animal and Veterinary Sciences and Faculty of
Forestry, Range Management and Wildlife. He said five projects costing Rs166.310
million had been finalised and the Punjab government approved five more projects
amounting to Rs195.706 million. He said UAAR’s budget for 2008-09 had been
increased to Rs310.910 million against last year’s Rs 268.843 million budget.
Khan said they had reorganised and reequipped all UAAR laboratories and allied
facilities. He said they had also set up an agriculture research farm on 2,000
kanal land at Mauza Koont on Mandra-Chakwal Road.
Talking to journalists, Maqbool said the higher education standard in the country
had improved due to the efforts of President Pervez Musharraf and HEC during the
last eight years. He said in future there would be acute shortage of food all
over the world and university students and scholars should do more work as how
to overcome this crisis.
