Students of Punjab University (PU) Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) organised an awareness walk lead by ICS In-Charge Director Dr Noshina Saleem to promote awareness against acid attacks outside the institute.
On this occasion, she said that effective laws were required to curb acid attacks on women. In this regard, law-making was the need of the hour, she added.
Dr Noshina Saleem said that to prevent acid and other types of violence against women, proactive laws were needed to be put in place along with strict implementation of these laws. Emphasising the need for better and accessible education, she said education was one of the basic requirement for a progressive and tolerant society. Authorities should take stern action against those who sell acid openly and law enforcers should end this practice.
Assistant Professor Shabbir Sarwar said the government should implement laws to prevent this social evil. He said people responsible for such horrendous acts should be punished accordingly. He further said that media should also play its due role in eliminating this practice from the society.
Students were carrying banners and placards and chanting slogans against the barbaric practice during the walk. Other faculty members and students of the Institute of Communication Studies were also present on the occasion.
